IT'S GETTING CLOSE AT THE TOP OF THE JOE GIBBS DRIVEN RACING OIL ASA MEMBER TRACK NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP By Kevin Ramsell
BURLINGTON, WI Sep 06, 2008 - The final month of the inaugural Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship is going to be intriguing to watch as many drivers reach the magic number of 14 events to get an accurate performance indicator. Not only do the drivers have to worry about where they sit in the national picture, they need to win their own track championship first.
"You can already see how quickly the standings will change when the local
tracks reach their 14 events, thus allowing these great local drivers to get
an accurate performance indicator which will be used to determine a National
Champion," Dennis Huth, American Speed Association President stated. "The
tracks have done their part by providing 14 events for the drivers, now its
time for their talents to shine as they go after their own track
championship and ultimately an ASA Member Track National Championship."
Even though the member tracks are divided into two regions, there will only
be one National Champion. Jimmy Mullins continues to lead the East Region
at Franklin County Speedway with a performance indicator of 4.6077. West
Region leader, Cary Stapp at Thunderhill Raceway has a 4.3652. Only 0.2425
separate the top two going into the final month.
Mullins finished third this past Saturday night at the Callaway, VA track
but only has an 18-point lead over Rick Sigmon, who won the feature event.
They have one more point night left for this season and that will be this
upcoming Saturday night.
Tommy Cloce of Adirondack International Speedway in Lowville, NY shot up to
second in the East Region this past weekend with a 3.9010. The driver from
Canton, NY has a 53-point lead over Andre Roggie in the ASA Late Model
standings at Adirondack.
Last Saturday night, Roggie picked up the feature win while Close was right
behind him in second place.
So far this season, Cloce has five wins, with nine top-five and nine top-ten
finishes at the half-mile paved oval.
Stapp is in a tight battle for the West Region honors with his season long
nemesis Gary Madsen, as the two have shared the top spot all year long.
Stapp is ahead of Madsen by 0.1959 as Madsen has a performance indicator of
4.1693.
Stapp, from San Marcos, TX, is sitting pretty comfortable in the track
standings at Kyle, TX facility as he holds a 232-point lead over Leander, TX
driver Duane Toyne.
Last Saturday night, Stapp took home another feature win while Toyne
finished third.
Madsen, from Salt Lake City, UT, has a 113-point lead over Michael Hale at
the West Valley City, UT track.
Madsen and Hale enjoyed a nice Labor Day weekend off, but they will be back
at it this Saturday night.
There will be two regional champions, one from the East Region and one from
the West Region and there will only be one National Champion. For the
National Champion, their name will go in the history as the first Joe Gibbs
Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Champion and a tryout with Joe
Gibbs Racing.
If you haven't visited an ASA Member Track this season, it's highly
recommended that you make plans to this weekend. Cheer on your favorites!!!
Remember this, when you visit a local ASA Member Track, you don't need the
latest high definition television or the latest surround sound, its real and
right in front of you.
